Inspiration

Pieces we have cut, to show what the preview can only suggest — how deep the engraving runs, whether the recess is left bare or darkened, and how the same mark reads on gold against white metal.

Photo 1Fine line engraving — square crop, 1040 px or larger

Fine line engraving

0.2 mm, left bare — it reads as shadow, never as black.

Photo 2The same cut, white metal — square crop, 1040 px or larger

The same cut, white metal

Identical depth on sterling. Quieter, and it needs the light.

Photo 3Sculpted relief — square crop, 1040 px or larger

Sculpted relief

0.6–0.8 mm, cut on several levels so it stands off the field.

Photo 4Script monogram, darkened — square crop, 1040 px or larger

Script monogram, darkened

A 0.4 mm V-cut with the recess oxidised. Maximum contrast.

Photo 5Worn, at arm's length — square crop, 1040 px or larger

Worn, at arm's length

A 17 mm face. Fine line-work beside a single block initial.

Photo 6One cut, three metals — square crop, 1040 px or larger

One cut, three metals

The same engraving on black, gold and steel.

DepthLine engraving runs about 0.2 mm and reads as a fine shadow. Deep V-cut goes to 0.4 mm and holds its edge for decades. Sculpted relief is 0.6 mm and up, cut on several levels — the most striking and the most expensive.
FillLeft bare, the cut is the same colour as the ring and shows through shadow alone — quiet, and it never wears. Darkened (oxidised), it reads across a room. The fill slowly wears back at the high points and can be re-blackened.
MetalGold gives the most contrast for a bare cut, because the shadow falls against a warm surface. On silver and steel the same cut is softer — if you want it to carry, darken it.

How to measure your ring size

A strip of paper and a ruler. Do it on the hand and the finger the ring is actually for — an engraved ring cannot be returned for change of mind.

01Prepare a measuring tool
Photo 01Hand holding a cut paper strip between thumb and forefinger1200 × 880 px · 15:11
Cut a strip of ordinary paper about 5 mm wide and 100 mm long. Paper, not string — string stretches and will size you too small.
02Circle it on your finger
Photo 02The strip wrapped around the base of the ring finger1200 × 880 px · 15:11
Wrap it around the base of the finger the ring is for. Snug, not tight — and check it still slides over the knuckle before you go further.
03Mark the overlap
Photo 03A fine pen marking where the strip overlaps itself1200 × 880 px · 15:11
With the strip in place, mark the point where it overlaps itself. One clean line with a fine pen. Then slide it off without letting it shift.
04Find your size
Photo 04The strip laid flat against a ruler, mark on the millimetre scale1200 × 880 px · 15:11
Measure to the mark in millimetres. That figure is the circumference — match it in the chart below to get your AUS/UK or US size.
Size conversion chart AUS/UK · US · diameter · circumference
AUS / UKUSInner Ø (mm)Circumference (mm)
Measurements are inner diameter and inner circumference. A wide signet sits tighter than a thin band — if you are between sizes, go up.
Measure warmFingers shrink in the cold. Measure at the end of the day, at room temperature.
Mind the knuckleIf the knuckle is much larger than the base, size to the knuckle — it has to get on.
Dominant handThe dominant hand usually runs a half size larger. Tell us which hand it is for.
